Mt Popa clean-up campaign interests many

The garbage collection campaign for a clean Mount Popa is gaining interest from the people, according to the data. This campaign, which will commence in the early morning of 18 February, will see environmentalists share their knowledge with an audience of nearly 100, including invited local people. “People coming on their own are requested to arrive by the evening of 17 February. Maha Giri mountaineering team will set up a camping ground at the foot of the hill. As many tents as they have will be provided. Another camp will be arranged in front of Popa horse riding camp. Veteran mountaineers will start climbing Mt Popa on the night of 17 February. Those staying at the base will collect garbage while climbing.   Those staying at the summit will collect rubbish in difficult areas like mountain-top, slope and valley. So, only experienced people will be invited there. Small groups will be formed depending on the number of participants,” said U Myo Myint Bo, a campaign leader, said in a Facebook post. Many have commented their interest and willingness to join it, along with some advice. Easily degradable gunny sacks will be used instead of garbage bags and rented motorbikes will take the sacks to the base. “I want locals, environment-lovers, mountaineers, adventurers, cyclists, runners, cycle tourists, bird watchers, landscape photographers, painters, writers, artists, etc to join the campaign. I especially want travel bloggers to come and share about ethics for travellers in their blogs,” he said. The campaign is organized by the One Myanmar Adventure and mainly sponsored by the Changan Auto Myanmar together with other companies and civil society organizations. Htet Oo Maung/ZN credit
